Phantoms Edged by Mustangs in Last Game of Season
Blue Bell, PA — The Delaware Community College men's soccer team capped the 2021 campaign with a 2-1 loss to host Montgomery County Community College on Tuesday afternoon.
After the Mustangs opened the scoring in the 8th minute, Henry Gjergo scored his team-high ninth of the season off an assist from Soufiane Elkhiam to tie the game 10 minutes beore intermission. Elkhiam tallied his first collegiate point on the pass to Gjergo.
Montgomery (2-4-3) tallied the eventual game winner at the midway point of the second half.
Finishing with nine total shots in the game, Gjergo finishes his season ranked second among all National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA) players in total shots with 88, despite just playing in 11 contests.
Jonathan Deutsch registered five saves in the net for DCCC (3-8).
The loss brings an end to the Phantoms' careers of John Lenart and Jewel Myles-Arthur who were stalwarts on defense for DCCC this season.
Building off the foundational work put in by coach Fatoma Turay in his first season in the program, the Phantoms eye a return to the NJCAA playoffs in 2022.
