DCCC Drops Three-Game Series to Salem
Media, PA & Carneys Point, NJ—The Delaware County Community College baseball team showed resilience and determination throughout a weekend series with the Salem Mighty Oaks but went winless over three games. "Though Salem secured the sweep, we continued to battle and showed flashes of strong play," said DCCC Phantoms Head Coach Ryan Hunter.
DCCC struggled to generate offense in Friday's series opener at home. Despite the 18-2 loss, the Phantoms remained focused and committed to improving throughout the weekend, Hunter said, fueling their efforts in Saturday's doubleheader at Salem.
In Game 2, while Salem built an early lead en route to a 13-2 win, the Phantoms found ways to get on the board on the road, scoring in the fifth and seventh innings. Facing an early four-run deficit in Game 3, DCCC delivered the team's best offensive performance of the series with six runs, falling 9-6 at the final out. "The final game showcased the Phantoms' fighting spirit," said Hunter. "We continued to push back."
"This is early in the season in chilly temperatures against an opponent that has more on-field experience than us this spring," he continued. "Once our bats come alive, we'll be much more competitive throughout the season."
Hunter reported that Eric Engesser led the way in the Saturday doubleheader, going 3-for-7, while Landyn Washington provided a spark with three RBI, four stolen bases, and a 3-for-10 (.300 BA) performance across the series.
The Phantoms now shift focus to their next challenge and look to build on their progress as they travel to Mays Landing, NJ, to take on the Atlantic Cape Community College club team on March 10. First pitch is set for 3:30 PM in the teams' second meeting of the season, with DCCC winning the initial matchup 10-2.
