Phantoms Open at Home With 10-2 Win

Media, PA—In an outing of firsts and foundations, the Delaware County Community College baseball team opened its 2025 season with a 10-2 victory over the Atlantic Cape Community College club team. The game was called after seven innings due to darkness.

"It was a good start to get the nerves out," said DCCC Phantoms Head Coach Ryan Hunter. "Our young guys got their first real taste of college baseball." Four first-year Phantoms—Landyn Washington, Gabriel Murphy, Jarrett Mayes, and Steven Perez—each recorded their initial collegiate hit. Washington went the extra 180 feet with a triple while contributing 4 RBI, a team high. Murphy and returner Benjamin Beasley each doubled.

"We saw a lot of things that were positive for game one," Coach Hunter said, noting the three extra-base hits as well as highlighting the pitching from starter Hunter Whitten and Matt Delacruz in relief. "Our two pitchers combined for 70 percent strikes, which is phenomenal this early in the year. We did a good job of pounding the zone the entire game."

Delacruz didn't allow a walk or a run over four innings while striking out 11. Whitten (1-0) added seven strikeouts while only giving up one earned run.

The team has a long way to go and a lot of work to do, Hunter emphasized. "Overall, we have a lot to clean up," he said. "In our first time actually using our field this season, we made mistakes and committed 4 errors. We need to be a little more aware of situations."

The 1-0 Phantoms hit the road on Friday to play Salem Community College and then are slated to host a Saturday doubleheader with Salem starting at noon on March 8. DCCC plays at its Marple Campus at 901 S Media Ln Rd, Media, PA.

And that's just the start. "We play nine games in eight days with majority being away and face some really tough competition," said Hunter.
